Supernatural Big Bang Art 2009 - The Hapless Soldier's Sigh
This is the first time I've participated in [info]spn_j2_bigbang and I had a real blast with it. I worked with [info]bad_peppermint on her story The Hapless Soldier's Sigh (I'll link over there once she's put it up) and it was just a real delight to illustrate off of - so many great ideas!

In terms of inspiration (none of which I'm sure that are actually visible in int) for the piece, I really wanted to do something with some solid roots in old fairy tale illustrations and really draw from the source text for motifs and...so forth. James Jean's palettes were a big inspiration, although I've managed to completely wander away from that.

Thanks, bad_peppermint for being such a great sport; I really enjoyed illustrating for you. Also thank you to all you girls running the big bang community - it's a blast reading and oogling at the gorgeous artwork produced each year, and it was a real honor to participate this year.

Oh man, thank you. It's been a while since I've actually FINISHED a piece, so I'm pretty proud. Haha.

I like the art! it's very 'fairy tale story book' kinda art, like you know that there's going to be a very bad villain inside the story and that you just want to read and not read the story at the same time.

Also, the art reminded me of Neil Gaiman's books, the illustrations i mean, along with the colour scheme and the mood. :p

creepy! i especially love the tree branches touching the boys - it looks like they're trying to be comforting in a really, really disturbing way.

Fabulous artwork, looks straight out of a children's book illustration, very professional looking.

I think other people have said this already but it really does look like an illustration out of a children's storybook. The way the tree wraps round the overall image and then connects back to Sam is great - I particular liked that :)
